What's Dr. JJ taking today?

Dr. JJ is drinking camomile tea.  Camomile tea is one of the first recommendations Dr. JJ makes for his patients suffering from insomnia.  It is very calming.  You can even give camomile tea to babies, either as a tea or as a homeopathic for teething.

Camomile tea is a gentle sedative.  It works well for insomnia and digestive problems.  It is also anti-spasmatic.  Camomile tea is something everyone should have in their cupboard.

What is Insomnia?
Insomnia is when you cannot sleep.  You can have different types of insomnia acute or chronic.

An example of acute insomnia is when you can't sleep because you have a big presentation the next day or an exam the next day.

There can be different triggers for chronic insomnia, like medication, disease.  Some people with SAD can have chronic insomnia.

What happens to your body if you don't get a good night's sleep?

If you don't get a good night's sleep, you will be fatigued, your mental concentrati on is off, your mood is off, you may feel depressed.  Your body repairs itself when you are sleeping, so if you don't get a good night's sleep you may find that you have more aches and pains.

What are some natural strategies to get a good night's sleep?

  • practice good sleep hygiene.  This means creating a sleep routine, going to be and waking up at roughly the same time every day to create a rhythm for your body; relax before bed- don't do anything too stimulating (sex is o.k.), but don't watch the news or read the paper or do anything that provokes you; avoid caffeine - it takes about 3 hours to clear from your system, even longer for some people; sleep in complete darkness, you shouldn't be able to see your hand in front of your eyes; some people are sensitive to things that are plugged in like computers, stereos and TV's so keep these out of your bedroom; keep the temperature cooler.
  • camomile tea or a "sleepy time" tea; Jennifer sometimes drinks a tea with camomile, jamaican dogwood (a mild sedative), passion flower, skullcap and hops (this mix is quite strong).  There are no addictive side effects with these kind of teas.  Jennifer drinks this tea when she can't get to sleep, but she needs to make sure she gets a good night's sleep.  Even if she only gets 4 hours of sleep, it will be a very deep sleep.  Some people find they dream more vividly when they take skullcap.
  • Homeopathics: Coffea Cruda and Passion Flower.  Coffea Cruda is essentially homeopathic coffee.  The premise of homeopathy is like cures like, so if you can't get to sleep, just like a caffeine buzz, then coffea cruda would be a good remedy for you, as it will calm you down.
  • Magnesium is anti-spasmatic which helps calm down your body.  It is a gentle sedative.
  • Writing in a journal is good for people who are stressed out and who have a list in your head.  If you stop and write things down, then it almost frees your mind to let you fall asleep.  It's a great idea to keep a pen and a journal or a pad of paper by your bed to write things down.
  • An Amethyst Bio Mat (Jennifer's sitting on a mini Amethyst mat) is another tool that Jennifer uses to help calm her get a good night's sleep.  The amethyst is very calming and the heat from the far infrared rays helps keep her warm when she's first falling asleep.
