What are some common causes of neck pain?

What can you do to relieve neck pain?

A sample osteopathic treatment for neck tension.

What's Dr. JJ taking today?

Dr. JJ is taking Magnesium, which is a mineral.  Dr. JJ takes magnesium on a nightly basis usually for muscle spasms.  People with chronic neck pain tend to have a lot of muscle guarding and magnesium tends to help for that.

What are some common causes of neck pain?
Often back, neck and shoulder pain is caused by lifestyle factors, like:

1. The way people sit in their chair at work.  Often the office chairs are not very good at  supporting the individual's lower back and neck.  Not only are people often sitting a lot, but they are usually sitting at computers.  The way people's arms are positioned when working on a computer can put people in a posture that can cause pain or soreness by the end of the day.

2. Poor posture in general.  A lot of people don't do exercises to keep their core muscles tight and promote good stability down in their lower back.  This causes them to slouch and when you start to slouch, your neck is affected.  As you slouch for longer periods of time, you begin to get tight muscles.

3. How you sleep.  People who sleep on a poorly supporting mattress, with a pillow that doesn't fit their neck, or if that sleep on their stomach (no one should sleep on their stomach) often experience neck muscle pain.

What can you do to relieve neck pain?

While it is important to get neck pain relief, you also need to look at the source of the neck pain, to help prevent it from recurring.

Relieving neck pain can be as simple as making some lifestyle changes.

For those who work sitting down, they should get a chair that is the right height for them, with lower back support (when your lower back is supported, people tend to sit more upright), make sure the table height, and if you are working at a computer, the monitor height so you are not looking up too high or down too low.  Your arms should also be supported so your shoulders are not hunched up.  Essentially you want a work space that will allow your spine to sit in its natural position.

Some of these tips would apply to people who drive a lot.

Everyone can also benefit from building their abdominal core strength to keep your posture in a better position.

Relaxation also helps tremendously, as stress is often a big issue in people's lives.  When people start to get stressed, they pull their shoulders up.  It is important to incorporate some deep breathing or relaxation into your life!  Even if you cannot do yoga or meditation, just stopping every day for 1 minute to breathe deeply. (You may even put on a timer)

Osteopathic Demonstration to help relieve Neck Tension

Osteopathy is one form of neck pain therapy.  There are a number of techniques an osteopathic practitioner can do to help relieve neck pain, to relax the joints and the muscles.  Laura demonstrates a few of them.
