What's Dr. JJ taking today: Multivitamin
A multivitamin is a mixture of vitamins and minerals. The one JJ is taking today also contains some fruits and vegetables.

What are vitamins and minerals?

Vitamins and minerals are essential nutrients your body needs to function, that it cannot make. There are water soluble and fat soluble vitamins. Water soluble vitamins include Vitamin C and the B Vitamins. Fat soluble vitamins include Vitamins A, D, E and K. Minerals include calcium, magnesium, and iron. Our bodies need each of these nutrients for different reasons. For instance, you need iron for energy and for your red blood cells; you need calcium for your bones; Vitamin C to prevent scurvy.

What are some signs of vitamin & mineral deficiencies?
Although scurvy is thought of being a disease from the past, it is possible for people to still have a lack of vitamin C today. Dr. JJ's colleague had a patient who developed scurvy as a result of having a diet of just beer and pizza. The patient did not get enough Vitamin C in his diet.
Other vitamin deficiencies include night blindness from a lack of Vitamin A; women often are deficient in B vitamins, a contributing factor is that the birth control pill depletes B vitamins, which may cause a problem with fatigue or thyroid problems or anemia; and calcium deficiency causes osteoporosis.

What is the best way to get our daily requirements of vitamins and minerals?
Ideally, it is best to get our daily vitamins and minerals through your diet. Unfortunately, food today is overly processed and often genetically modified. Ideally the best food to consume would be fresh from the garden, raw and organic because these foods would have the most nutrients for your body. When food becomes radiated, frozen, heated, salted or transported, you lose a lot of the nutrients. Most people need to take additional vitamins orally, like a multivitamin, to top things up.

How do you know what vitamins to pick at the health food store?
When you go to a health food store it can seem overwhelming. There are so many types of vitamins from different manufacturers, in different dosages and in different formats, it's hard to know what is best for you. To pick a multivitamin:

  • look for minerals in citrate form, this is the best absorbable form of the minerals.
  • avoid fillers and dyes
  • avoid aluminum

How do I know what vitamins I should take?
Ideally, you should work with a natural healthcare practitioner to review your personal health and to determine the right vitamins and minerals to add to your regime.
